Bronze – Emergency Locking Seatbelt

Passenger car regulations require three-point seatbelts, and the emergency locking seatbelt is the lowest level. Its working principle is: when a collision occurs, the car suddenly decelerates, and the occupant's body continues to move forward due to inertia. The webbing pulls forward accordingly. When the webbing's extension acceleration exceeds the national standard, the retractor (installed inside the interior, it's the seatbelt's "brain") immediately locks the webbing, stopping the occupant from leaning forward. The greater the acceleration during a collision, the greater the force exerted on the occupant when the webbing locks, resulting in greater chest injury (in extreme cases, excessive force may cause damage to the ribs and internal organs).

 

Silver – Force Limiting Seatbelt

Building upon the emergency locking seatbelt, a force limiter is added inside the retractor. In the event of a collision, the force limiter of the seatbelt activates rapidly, ensuring that the force applied to the occupant remains within the designed range (excessive force leads to excessive chest injury, while insufficient force fails to hold the body, making the head susceptible to injury from impact with objects in front). The appropriate force value is what designers must consider.

 

The Golden Standard – Single Pretensioning Force Limiter Seatbelt

Building upon the aforementioned force-limiting seatbelt, the retractor incorporates a pre-tensioning system. Upon collision, the collision controller instructs the retractor to pre-tension. The immense energy generated at the moment of pre-tensioning causes the seatbelt to rapidly pull back a section of webbing, promptly pulling the occupant towards the seat back – this is called pre-tensioning. After pre-tensioning, the force limiter activates, the webbing locks, and the force applied to the occupant's body remains within the designed range. Don't underestimate this instantaneous pull; this action reduces the occupant's forward lean, increasing protection.

 

Diamond – Dual Pretensioner and Force Limiter Seatbelt

The single pretensioner seatbelt only pretensions the area from the shoulder to the waist (where the buckle is inserted). The dual pretensioner and force limiter adds a pretensioner to the webbing at the waist, also called a lumbar pretensioner. Its working principle is that when the collision signal is received and detonated, in addition to the retractor detonating, the pretensioner at the lower end of the webbing detonates, quickly pulling the webbing back to reduce hip displacement and secondary injuries to the lower limbs.

 

King – Active Pretensioner Seatbelt

The active pretensioner seatbelt adds an active retraction motor to the pretensioner and force limiter seatbelt. When an unavoidable collision is imminent, the active pretensioner seatbelt can instantly pretension the seatbelt, ensuring the occupant is firmly seated. The forward momentum of the body is reduced, resulting in better subsequent pretensioning and force limiting effects, less injury to the occupant, and further improved protection. In other extreme dangerous situations (such as vehicle instability, drifting, skidding, etc.), the active pretensioner seat belts can also pre-tension the seat belts, allowing occupants to be better restrained in their seats. Active pretensioner seat belts can also be combined with dual pretensioner force-limiting seat belts, dual force-limiting seat belts, airbag seat belts, etc., to further enhance the protective effect.
